Pearson now offers two distinct tests under the PTE brand. Picking the wrong one is one of the costliest mistakes — your score won't be accepted.

Which One Do You Need?

  • Australian PR (189/190/491): PTE Academic ✅
  • Australian Student Visa (500): PTE Academic ✅
  • Canada Express Entry: PTE Core ✅ (Academic NOT accepted)
  • Canada PR / PNP: PTE Core
  • UK Skilled Worker Visa: PTE Academic UKVI ✅
  • UK Student Visa (degree): PTE Academic UKVI ✅
  • US Universities: PTE Academic ✅
  • NZ Skilled Migrant: PTE Academic ✅

Question Type Differences

Academic-only types: Re-tell Lecture, Summarise Group Discussion, Essay, Highlight Correct Summary.

Core-only types: Respond to a Situation, Write Email.

The other 17 types are shared between both tests — but Core uses simpler vocabulary and shorter passages.

If You Took the Wrong One

Your score is NOT transferable between Academic and Core. If you took Academic but need Core (or vice versa), you must retake — full fee, full prep again.
