The 0–90 PTE Scale

Pearson uses a continuous 0–90 scale (whole numbers only). Unlike IELTS's discrete bands, PTE allows fine-grained scoring — the gap between 64 and 65 matters; you're not rounded into a band.

What Each Band Means (CEFR Equivalent)

PTE ScoreCEFR LevelDescription
85+C2Mastery — near-native fluency, advanced academic vocabulary.
76–84C1Proficient — handles complex texts and ideas easily.
59–75B2Upper-intermediate — interacts fluently with native speakers.
43–58B1Intermediate — can manage everyday situations.
30–42A2Elementary — basic personal and routine information.
10–29A1Beginner — very basic English.

Migration Score Bands (Australia & NZ)

  • Functional (PTE 30): minimum bar for some visas, no points.
  • Vocational (PTE 36): some skilled visas, no points.
  • Competent (PTE 50): baseline for most skilled visas, 0 points.
  • Proficient (PTE 65): 10 points in AU PR.
  • Superior (PTE 79): 20 points in AU PR — the high-value target.

What You Get on Your Score Report

  1. Overall score — single 0–90 number.
  2. Section scores — Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening (each 0–90).
  3. Enabling skills — Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse (each 0–90). These are diagnostic — they don't affect your sectional scores directly but indicate where you're losing marks.

How Sections Roll Up to Overall

Pearson does NOT publish the exact weighting formula, but Overall is approximately the average of your 4 section scores, weighted slightly by question count per section.

Why It's Hard to Jump from 79 → 85

The scale is non-linear. Going from PTE 50 → 65 takes ~3 months of consistent prep; 65 → 79 takes ~3–6 months; 79 → 85+ requires advanced strategy and near-perfect performance. Most candidates plateau at 70–75.
