How PTE Scoring Works — Communicative + Enabling Skills
2 min read
Two Layers of Scores
Your PTE score report shows two layers:
- Communicative skills — the 4 main section scores: Speaking, Writing, Reading, Listening.
- Enabling skills — 6 diagnostic sub-scores: Grammar, Oral Fluency, Pronunciation, Spelling, Vocabulary, Written Discourse.
Communicative Skills
These are the scores institutions and immigration look at. Each is on the 0–90 scale and reflects your overall ability in that channel.
- Speaking: Read Aloud, Repeat Sentence, Describe Image, Re-tell Lecture, Answer Short Question, Summarise Group Discussion.
- Writing: Summarise Written Text, Write Essay (or Write Email for Core).
- Reading: Multiple Choice, Re-order Paragraphs, Fill in the Blanks (drag + dropdown).
- Listening: Summarise Spoken Text, Multiple Choice, Fill in Blanks, Highlight Correct Summary, Highlight Incorrect Words, Select Missing Word, Write from Dictation.
Cross-Skill Contributions
Many question types contribute to TWO sections. For example:
- Read Aloud contributes to both Reading AND Speaking.
- Repeat Sentence contributes to Listening AND Speaking.
- Summarise Spoken Text contributes to Listening AND Writing.
- Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks (dropdown) contributes to Reading AND Writing.
- Write from Dictation contributes to Listening AND Writing — highest dual-impact type.
That's why Write from Dictation is the highest-leverage practice: a 10% improvement lifts two sections.
Enabling Skills (Diagnostic)
These don't add to your communicative scores directly. They diagnose where you're losing marks.
| Enabling Skill | What It Measures |
|---|---|
| Grammar | Sentence structure correctness in writing + speaking. |
| Oral Fluency | Smoothness, rhythm, pace of speaking. Hesitations and restarts hurt this score most. |
| Pronunciation | Intelligibility to a native English ear. |
| Spelling | Spelling accuracy in writing tasks. |
| Vocabulary | Range and accuracy of word choice. |
| Written Discourse | Logical flow, coherence, and structure of essays. |
How to Use Enabling Skills to Improve
- If Oral Fluency is low → drill Read Aloud and Repeat Sentence; pace yourself.
- If Pronunciation is low → record yourself, compare to native audio.
- If Spelling is low → keep a personal misspelled-words list.
- If Grammar is low → focus on Reading & Writing Fill in the Blanks (forces grammar awareness).
- If Vocabulary is low → read PTE-style passages daily, note unfamiliar words.
- If Written Discourse is low → use a fixed essay structure (intro / body / conclusion).
