Why does my Speaking score fluctuate so much?

Speaking is the most variable module on PTE because the AI is evaluating not just what you say but how it sounds — pronunciation, fluency, oral pace, and pause patterns. Three environmental factors swing your score wildly between practice sessions, often by 10+ points:

Microphone quality. A built-in laptop mic captures your voice plus ambient noise plus keyboard taps plus the fridge in the next room. The AI hears all of it. A USB headset mic placed 3 cm from your mouth captures only you — and produces dramatically more consistent scores. Use the same headphones for every practice session.

Ambient noise. Even quiet background noise (fan, traffic, conversation through a wall) confuses the AI about where your speech ends and silence begins. Practise in the quietest room you have. Close doors. Turn off fans.

Pacing consistency. Speaking too fast in one attempt and too slowly in the next produces wildly different fluency scores even if your content is identical. Pick one comfortable pace and stick to it.

How do I stabilise my Speaking score?

Three steps: (1) buy a $30 USB headset and use it exclusively, (2) record one warm-up minute reading any text aloud before starting practice — your vocal cords need it, (3) practise to a metronome at 130–150 words per minute until that pace feels automatic.
