PTE Core Launched — What General English Test Takers Need to Know
What is PTE Core?
Pearson launched PTE Core in November 2023 as a separate test brand alongside PTE Academic. Designed for general English proficiency rather than academic, it targets immigration applicants whose primary use of English is everyday work and life — not university study.
Major Acceptance: Canada Express Entry
The biggest news: IRCC (Canadian immigration) accepts PTE Core for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, Canadian Experience Class, and other PR pathways. PTE Academic is NOT accepted for these — only PTE Core. See PTE for Canada Express Entry.
Format Differences from PTE Academic
- Slightly easier vocabulary — everyday English instead of academic.
- Two new question types: Respond to a Situation (Speaking) + Write Email (Writing).
- Removes Academic-only types: Re-tell Lecture, Summarise Group Discussion, Essay, Highlight Correct Summary.
- Same duration (~2 hours) and same 0–90 scale.
- Same AI-only scoring engine.
Who Should Take PTE Core?
- Anyone applying for Canadian PR via Express Entry or PNP.
- Skilled workers who need to demonstrate general English (not academic).
- Care workers and tradespeople.
Who Should Stick with PTE Academic?
- University admissions (Australia, UK, USA, Canada universities).
- Australian skilled migration (189/190/491).
- UK Skilled Worker Visa, Student Visa.
- NZ Skilled Migrant Category.
Pricing & Booking
PTE Core costs roughly the same as PTE Academic in most countries. You book at pearsonpte.com — make sure you select PTE Core, not PTE Academic, when booking.
How ClearMyPTE Supports PTE Core
You can switch your account to test type: Core in your profile. Practice questions, mock exams, and predicted scores will then reflect the Core format — including Respond to a Situation and Write Email. See PTE Academic vs Core for the full comparison.
