Re-order Paragraphs — Connector & Pronoun Chains

1 min read

What is Re-order Paragraphs?

You see 4–5 sentences in random order. Drag them into the correct logical sequence. Tests Reading.

Format & Timing

  • Sentences to order: 4–5
  • Time per question: ~2 minutes
  • Number per exam: 2–3

Scoring

  • 1 point per correct adjacent pair. So a 5-sentence question has 4 possible points (4 adjacent pairs).
  • Even partial ordering scores points.

The 4-Step Method

  1. Find the topic sentence (the opener). It introduces a topic without referring to anything earlier. Often a general statement.
  2. Find the conclusion sentence (the closer). Often contains "therefore", "in conclusion", "ultimately".
  3. Match the middle by chains:
    • Pronoun chains: "It", "they", "this" must refer to something in a prior sentence.
    • Connector chains: "However", "Furthermore", "On the other hand" link to a specific prior idea.
    • Definite articles: "the X" implies X was introduced earlier as "an X".
  4. Read your final order. Does it flow as one coherent paragraph? If not, swap the weakest link.

Opener Indicators

  • Sentence with no pronouns referring backwards.
  • Names a topic generally, e.g. "Climate change is a complex issue."
  • Often shorter than other sentences.

Common Mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong opener — affects everything downstream.
  • Ignoring connectors at the start of sentences — they are huge clues.
  • Not re-reading the final order — coherence catches errors.
