Respond to a Situation — Strategy Guide (Core only)
1 min read
What is Respond to a Situation?
You hear or read a short everyday scenario (e.g. ordering food, asking for directions, complaining about a service), then respond appropriately in 40 seconds. PTE Core only — replaces some Academic-only types in the Core test.
Format & Timing
- Scenario: 10–15 second audio or short text
- Preparation: 20 seconds
- Recording: 40 seconds
How It Is Scored
- Content: appropriate response to the scenario, stays on topic.
- Oral Fluency: smooth speech.
- Pronunciation: intelligibility.
The STAR Response Template
- Situation acknowledgement: "I understand the issue is..."
- Task / your role: "What I would do is..."
- Action: 2–3 specific things you would say or do
- Result / closing: "...so that the situation is resolved" or "Thank you for your help"
Common Scenario Types
- Customer service: complaining about a faulty product, requesting a refund.
- Workplace: asking for time off, requesting a meeting.
- Social: politely declining an invitation, congratulating someone.
- Travel: asking for directions, booking a hotel, dealing with a missed flight.
Tone Tips
- Match the formality of the scenario — workplace = polite formal; chatting with a friend = casual.
- Use polite phrasing: "Could you please...", "I would like to...", "Would it be possible to..."
- Don't be aggressive even in complaint scenarios — graders score appropriateness.
Common Mistakes
- Going off-topic — the scenario is the prompt; stay anchored to it.
- Filling time with irrelevant detail — concise on-topic content wins.
- Using overly informal English in formal scenarios.
