What is Write Essay?
Argumentative essay (200–300 words) on a given topic in 20 minutes. PTE Academic only.
Format & Timing
- Total time: 20 minutes
- Word limit: 200–300 (going over is fine but over 380 truncates scoring)
- Number per exam: 1–2
The 5-Paragraph Structure
- Introduction (40–50 words): paraphrase the prompt + state your position. Two sentences.

- Counterpoint or 3rd argument (40–50 words): acknowledge opposing view + rebut.
- Conclusion (30–40 words): restate position + future implication.
Time Allocation
- 3 min: read prompt, brainstorm, outline arguments
- 13 min: write the essay following the 5-paragraph structure
- 4 min: proofread for grammar, spelling, and word count
How It Is Scored
- Content (3): directly addresses prompt, develops a clear position.
- Form (1): within 200–300 words.
- Development & Coherence (2): logical flow, paragraphing, linking words.
- Grammar (2): correct structure.
- Vocabulary (2): range and accuracy.
- Spelling (2): American OR British, but be consistent.
Linking Words to Memorise
- Adding: furthermore, in addition, moreover
- Contrasting: however, on the other hand, although, despite
- Example: for instance, for example, such as
- Concluding: in conclusion, to summarise, ultimately
Common Mistakes
- Going off-topic — write about exactly what the prompt asks, not a related issue.
- Going over 380 words — anything past that is ignored, and you wasted time.
- Spelling errors — every error costs spelling score points.
- One huge paragraph — coherence score drops to zero.
